President Donald Trump’s pick for acting director of national intelligence threatens to stifle Democratic support for extending a controversial spy powers law that US congressional leaders have been struggling to pass for months.

Trump announced Tuesday he’s appointing Bill Pulte, who heads the federal mortgage regulation agency, as acting director of national intelligence. Pulte is considered Trump’s close and reliable political supporter, and he doesn’t have intelligence community experience.
