Comet Attacks Perplexity’s Trademark Fraud Countersuit, Defenses

AI company Comet ML asked a federal judge to dismiss Perplexity AI’s counterclaim that Comet ML fraudulently registered a trademark that it’s accusing Perplexity’s “Comet” browser of infringing.

Perplexity failed to plausibly allege Comet ML made any false statement—much less knowingly—in its application for a “Comet” trademark, Comet ML argued in a motion filed Aug. 8 in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. It also attacked all five of Perplexity’s affirmative defenses against Comet ML’s trademark infringement claims, calling for them to be stricken.
