Survivors and families of victims of a 2023 mass shooting in Maine sued the US government for ignoring escalating warning signs it saw in the gunman, an Army reservist, and failing to take action that could have prevented the tragedy.

The lawsuit, filed in US District Court in Maine by 100 survivors and victims’ families, called the deadly incident “one of the most preventable mass tragedies in American history” given the government’s knowledge of shooter Robert Card’s deteriorating mental health and access to guns.
