NY Yeshiva Regulation Row Hinges on Students’ Due Process Rights

A New York State judge cast doubt on claims from Hasidic and Haredi students attending Jewish yeshivas that they have a right to a sound basic education under the state constitution during a hearing Tuesday.

Kings County Supreme Court Justice Katherine Levine, who is overseeing a challenge to the state’s decision rolling back certain educational standards for private schools, signaled her decision on whether to dismiss the lawsuit may hinge instead on whether the state violated the due process rights of students, who are currently enrolled in or recently attended ultra-Orthodox yeshivas.
