The US Department of Justice targeted Minnesota Monday with a lawsuit over the state’s immigrant sanctuary policies, the latest in a list of municipalities sued by the Trump Administration this year.
The lawsuit, which also names the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul as well as Hennepin County, targets Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s interpretation of state law, which prohibits state and local law enforcement from arresting individuals based on federal immigration enforcement directives. Trump’s Department of Homeland Security has issued 2,988 detainers in Minneapolis and St. Paul, it said in the complaint, had made 1,522 arrests.
