US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary resigned Tuesday, according to President Donald Trump, intensifying the turmoil atop the nation’s health agencies.

Kyle Diamantas, a lawyer who previously served as the FDA’s top food official, will take over the commissioner role in an acting capacity, Trump said in a social media post.

Makary “was having some difficulty, you know, he’s a great doctor, and he was having some difficulty, but he’s going to go on and he’s going to do well,” Trump said Tuesday, speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House.
