NYC Subway Looks to Replace Over 2,000 Train Cars in Aging Fleet

New York City’s transit system is preparing to replace about one-third of its aging subway fleet in what the Metropolitan Transportation Authority says would be the largest train-car purchase in its history.

The MTA, the nation’s biggest public transportation provider, released a request for proposals on Thursday seeking bids from manufacturers for as many as 2,390 new subway cars. That total exceeds the combined subway fleets of Chicago and Boston, Janno Lieber, the MTA’s chief executive officer, said at an event announcing the planned procurement.
