Kaiser Agrees to $47.5 Million Settlement in Data-Sharing Suit

Kaiser Foundation Health Plan would pay up to $47.5 million to settle a lawsuit alleging it disclosed patients’ personal information to Google LLC, Microsoft Corp., and other tech providers without consent in violation of state wiretapping laws, under a deal given initial approval in federal court.

Class members would be eligible for a pro-rata share of the settlement fund after deduction of attorneys’ fees and administrative costs, according to the plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary approval filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California on Dec. 5.
