Union officials say a string of recent accidents during the Broadway production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark illustrate chronic safety hazards in the theater industry.
“[Theater employers] are absolutely not protecting their performers,” Monona Rossol, health and safety director for Local 829 of the United Scenic Artists, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, told BNA Dec. 27. “Many issues have been ignored in theaters. We kill people. We’re a high-risk industry. And every other industry deals with [safety hazards], but this industry just throws money at it and waits for it to go away.”
