Lufthansa Cancels 800 Flights as Pilots, Crew Go on Strike (2)

Deutsche Lufthansa AGcanceled almost 800 flights Thursday after pilots and cabin crew called a one-day strike in response to stalled contract negotiations.

The walkouts started at 12:01 a.m. local time and are scheduled to last until 11:59 p.m. The job actions are grounding both commercial and cargo flights, and they come one day before world leaders are set to fly in for the Munich Security Conference.

The German carrier said the strikes hit customers “extremely hard” and almost 800 flights were canceled, affecting about 100,000 passengers. It expects to operate a fairly normal flight schedule starting Friday.
