New York state has quietly become the first in the nation to ask companies to disclose when artificial intelligence contributes to mass layoffs.

The move, a tweak to the state’s existing WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) system, took effect in March after it was first proposed in Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2025 State of the State address.
