The US Education Department is prohibited, for now, from cutting off $4.9 billion to California over the state’s alleged noncompliance with a federal parental rights law.
Although Judge Noël Wise said Wednesday there’s no “clear evidence” that the federal government intends to immediately withhold the funds, given that the administration “has been equivocal regarding whether and when it may take action” and the potential for “significant harm to the entire California education system,” a temporary restraining order is necessary pending further briefing.
