Prime Minister Keir Starmer came under mounting pressure on Wednesday over the judgment he showed in hiring Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US after he was forced to concede the envoy’s long-term friendship with Jeffrey Epstein was mentioned in the material used to vet his appointment.

Mandelson, the now-former member of the House of Lords, is facing a criminal probe over alleged misconduct in public office after emails released by the US Department of Justice appeared to show he disclosed market-sensitive information to Epstein while serving as a minister under former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
