May 1, 2026, 1:32 PM UTC

The Alabama Legislature enacted a law authorizing the Choctaw County Commission to increase county ad valorem taxes by up to an additional five mills on each dollar of assessed value, with proceeds dedicated exclusively to road and bridge improvement projects for periods limited to five tax years. The tax increase requires approval by a majority of qualified electors voting on the proposal at the next general, primary, constitutional, or special election held for that purpose. The law becomes effective immediately. [H.B. 635, enacted 04/17/26]
