The Alabama Governor signed a law proposing an amendment to the Alabama Constitution that would authorize Covington County residents, aged 65 or older, to claim a senior property tax exemption, freezing the assessed value of their primary residence if they have lived there for at least five years. The exemption would apply in addition to existing homestead exemptions, though property would remain subject to millage rate changes and any additions to the property would be taxed based on the increased assessed value.
