Austria Opposes EU Tobacco, E-Waste Proposals in Budget

The European Commission’s proposals to take a share of revenue from higher tobacco taxes and a new tax on e-waste “don’t tick the boxes,” according to Stefan Imhof, the Austrian finance ministry’s secretary general.

The proposals are two out of a number of measures proposed by the commission to fund its proposed €2 trillion ($2.34 trillion), seven-year budget for 2028-34. The commission also proposed an annual lump sum contribution from large companies operating in the EU, and a higher share of customs receipts.
