Belgium Lower House Considers Bill to Abolish VAT on Certain Food Products

The Belgian Chamber of Representatives Jan. 26 accepted for consideration Bill No. 55K3806001, to abolish VAT on certain food products. The bill includes measures to: 1) exempt from VAT all food products currently subject to a 6 percent VAT; and 2) exclude from the proposed VAT exemption certain seafood subject to a 21 percent VAT, including caviar, lobsters, crabs, crayfish, and oysters, as well as most beers and alcoholic beverages.
