Belgium to Raise EU3.1b From Windfall Taxes on Energy Companies

Belgium plans to raise EU3.1 billion from windfall taxes on energy companies as it looks cushion households against rising electricity prices.

  • EU2.2 billion will come from recouping surplus profits from electricity companies over the 18 months through June next year, Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten said in a tweet on Tuesday
    • This could be extended for another 6 months if prices remain elevated
  • Another EU900 million will come from the oil and gas sector under the so-called “solidarity contribution”
