Brazilian Lawmaker Proposes 7% Tax on Large Digital Companies

A member of Brazil’s House of Representatives introduced a bill to levy a 7% tax on tech companies that use, sell, or transfer services with user’s data.

The legislation, presented Wednesday by Rep. Guilherme Boulos of the Socialism and Liberty Party, proposes a “digital social contribution” levied on the gross revenue from digital advertising conducted with user data in Brazil.

The tax would also apply to the sale or transfer of data mined when a person is using the platform.
