California Governor Signs Law Amending Sales Tax Code for Volunteer Fire Departments

The California Governor signed a law amending Section 6018.10 of the Revenue and Taxation Code extending the deadline for considering volunteer fire departments as retailers for sales and use tax purposes to Jan. 01, 2031, from Jan. 1, 2026. The law also provides that the state shall not reimburse local agencies for sales and use tax revenue lost because of this law. The amendment takes immediate effect as a tax levy within the meaning of Article IV of the California Constitution and will remain in effect until Jan. 1, 2031, when it is repealed.
