Canada Tax Agency Loss in Cameco Spells Possible Changes Ahead

Companies in Canada can pursue transfer pricing in tax planning without worrying about what many consider to be the national tax authority’s misguided interpretation of the law now that a closely watched case is over, tax professionals said.

The Supreme Court of Canada’s decision Thursday to reject an appeal from the Canada Revenue Agency in its dispute with uranium miner Cameco Corp. ends decades of concern for tax planners, who can now advise clients to take a similar approach to Cameco with “reasonable comfort,” David Hogan, partner at Richter LLP, said in an interview.
