Canada will go ahead with plans for a domestic digital services tax, but it hopes that a global agreement superseding it takes effect sooner, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said Friday.
Finance Canada still intends to finalize legislation for a 3% tax on the revenues of digital giants by Jan. 1, 2022, she said in a statement.
The measure won’t be imposed until Jan. 1, 2024, however, giving the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development enough time to put its own agreement into effect. The department had previously wanted the tax “in effect” by Jan. 1, 2022.
