Countries Split on Need for Ramping Up Tax Work at United Nations

Officials at a UN meeting Friday were divided on whether the United Nations should become a center of international tax discussions, potentially shifting focus away from the OECD.

At a meeting at the UN’s Economic and Social Council, proponents of boosting the UN’s tax remit pointed to what they see as problems with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development-led global tax deal. They say those issues include not enough revenue for developing countries, and a decision-making process they say puts smaller nations at a disadvantage.
