Czech Premier Says Windfall Tax on Energy Companies Is an Option

Prime Minister Petr Fialasaid the Czech government is considering options including a windfall tax on energy companies’ extraordinary profits to help consumers hit by surging prices.

The five-party ruling coalition has agreed that producers and distributors of energy need to support the government’s effort to curb costs for households and businesses, Fiala said Sunday during a debate on the public broadcaster Czech Television.

Options to achieve that goal include “some temporary tax or some form of a voluntary agreement” to lower utility bills, according to the premier.
