Eton to Charge Parents Full 20% VAT on School Fees in January

Eton College, one of the UK’s most prestigious boarding schools, will charge parents the entire 20% VAT being added to school fees, after the Labour Party reiterated its commitment to removing the value-added tax exemption for private education.

In a letter sent to parents Friday, the school’s provost expressed disappointment in the policy and said he recognized “the concern that will be felt by many parents following this announcement.” The decision means that, starting in January, the fees to send one child to Eton will rise to more than £63,000 ($83,000) a year from around £53,000.
