EU Calls for Input on VAT Fraud-Busting Rule Upgrades

The European Commission is seeking comments on a plan to tighten EU rules on value-added tax cooperation as part of a bid to cut VAT fraud.

VAT losses across the European Union from fraud and inadequate collection equaled 93 billion euros ($101 billion) in 2020. Ideas to stem the losses could include new rules on cooperation between agencies and tax authorities in EU countries, and stricter requirements for chasing unpaid VAT, the commission said in a consultation released Thursday.
