EU Countries to Consider Temporary Opt-Out in VAT Bill

Hungary is mulling an amended bill that would allow EU countries to postpone collecting VAT from platform companies like Airbnb and Uber for a certain period of time.

The proposal, which isn’t formal yet, will be discussed at a meeting between EU diplomats Oct. 15, according to people familiar with the matter. The proposal is the latest attempt by Hungary, which currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, to make progress on a value-added tax overhaul that is currently being blocked by Estonia.
