EU Tax Advisers Wary of Harmonized Rules for Profession

The EU risks incurring bad tax advice if it tries to harmonize professional qualifications for tax advisers across the bloc, the president of an advisers group warned.

At an event organized by the European Tax Adviser Federation on Tuesday, group President Philippe Arraou said greater harmonization “may put at risk the high quality standards that define the regulated European tax advisory profession.”

Policy makers believe that removing some regulatory hurdles could boost growth, “but we must ask what is the true cost of lowering our standards,” Arraou said.
