EU Urged to Push For Quick VAT Deal to Avert Confusion

EU countries need to reach agreement by the end of the year on bloc-wide rules for near real-time digital reporting of transactions for the purposes of value-added taxes if they’re to avoid a clash with emerging national frameworks, a European Commission official said Thursday.

Member countries should agree to the new requirements so they can take effect from 2028, and those countries with national e-invoicing and digital reporting schemes can ensure they do not duplicate or overlap with the EU plan, said Agnes Fekete, a team leader in the commission’s VAT unit.
