Calls for a wealth tax are growing louder in Europe, but policymakers say they need to be better designed to help governments raise much-needed revenue.
If design flaws with wealth taxes could be fixed, they could be a “solution for the future,” including for revenues for the EU budget, said Aurore Lalucq, a French center-left member of the European Parliament.
Though slowly, “things are moving in the right direction” for new wealth taxes, after a period in which “the race to the bottom in taxation went too far,” she added.
