European Commission Proposes Council Decision to Continue Common VAT System for Fuel Consumption in U.K. for Northern Ireland

The European Commission (EC) Feb. 11 proposed Council Directive No. COM (2021) 53, to authorize the U.K. to continue the common VAT system for company car fuel consumption after the post-Brexit transitional period. The U.K., in respect of Northern Ireland, is permitted to calculate VAT for the fuel consumption of company cars used for private purposes based on carbon dioxide emissions. The regime remains in effect through Dec. 31, 2023. [European Union, EU Legal Database, 02/11/21]
