European Parliament Panel Backs Some EU Value-Added Tax Updates

The European Parliament’s economic and monetary affairs committee Tuesday approved three linked opinions on the application of European Union value-added tax rules to digital platforms and VAT reporting.

On sales of goods into the EU by non-EU vendors via digital platforms, the committee approved a rule proposed in May by the European Commission, the EU’s executive, that would make platforms the deemed suppliers for VAT purposes of higher-value goods.

Platforms such as eBay Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. currently act as deemed suppliers responsible for calculating, applying, and paying to tax authorities VAT on consignments supplied by non-EU sellers worth up ...
