Hanno Berger, once Germany’s most profitable tax lawyer, was charged and four bankers at M.M. Warburg & Co. were told they face trial over Cum-Ex transactions, paving the way for more court showdowns over the scandal that’s roiled the financial industry.

Berger participated in transactions that cost the government 278 million euros ($329 million), according to an indictment filed in the city of Bonn, a spokeswoman for the court said. The same tribunal separately ruled that the indictment against four Warburg bankers for an alleged 325 million-euro tax evasion can proceed.
