India Tax Department Boosts AI, Data Analytics to Widen Tax Net

India is making a big push to use data analytics and artificial intelligence to boost tax filings and target tax fraud and evasion, including in cryptocurrencies, the head of the country’s tax department said.

The department has put in place systems over the last decade that allow it to capture taxpayer data from multiple reporting authorities and other sources, and this data has now matured to enable the use of AI, Ravi Agrawal, chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, said in an interview on the occasion of India’s Income Tax Day, July 24.
