The Indonesian government is drafting three pieces of legislation that will serve as the foundation for the country’s long delayed carbon tax.
The new rules will outline how a carbon tariff would be imposed and regulated. Authorities are currently working on the legislation, which will likely be rolled out in 2024 or 2025, according to Hadi Setiawan, senior policy analyst for fiscal policy at the Ministry of Finance.
Indonesia, the world’s top exporter of thermal coal, has previously delayed imposing a carbon tax originally scheduled for April 2022 citing an unfavorable global macroeconomic environment, inflation and volatile energy prices.
