Ireland Could Come Out of EU-Apple State Aid Case Unscathed

An advisory opinion to the EU’s top court Thursday will bring a seven-year legal dispute involving Apple Inc. and a €13 billion ($14 billion) tax bill that Europe says is owed to Ireland one step closer to conclusion.

Advocate General Giovanni Pitruzzella is set to issue his nonbinding opinion to the Court of Justice of the European Union on a case brought by the European Commission against Apple in 2016. The commission alleged that tax rulings by the Irish government dating back to 1991 and 2007 amounted to illegal state aid to the company.
