Italy Tax Agency Clarifies Impatriate Regime for Teachers, Researchers Under Research Grants

The Italian Revenue Agency April 21 posted online Legal Principle No. 8/2023, clarifying the 90 percent individual income tax (IRPEF) exemption for recipients of research grants under temporary employment contracts, available for qualifying individuals with at least two years of overseas experience who relocate to Italy. The clarification explains: 1) the exemption applies to the first tax period in which a covered taxpayer acquires tax residency in Italy, as well as the next five consecutive tax periods; and 2) for research grants and related university employment, the first covered tax period coincides with the start of the grant.
