Assistant Treasury Secretary for Tax Policy Lily Batchelder will leave the department at the end of February, a Treasury official told Bloomberg Tax.
Batchelder, who was confirmed to her position by the Senate in September 2021, will return to New York University where she’s worked as the Robert C. Kopple Family Professor of Law at NYU School of Law.
In her role at Treasury, Batchelder was a key adviser to department Secretary Janet Yellen and headed the Office of Tax Policy. She also has overseen US negotiations in the OECD-led international tax deal, which aims to reduce corporate profit shifting between high- and low-tax jurisdictions.
- Batchelder took part in implementing aspects of the CHIPS and Inflation Reduction Acts—two mammoth pieces of legislation that were a top priority for President Joe Biden. Both provide incentives for the production of green energy projects and semiconductors, respectively, in the US through parts of the tax code.
- Her most recent stint at Treasury was not her first time in government. Batchelder served as the deputy director for the White House National Economic Council for Tax and Budget and deputy assistant to the president during the Obama administration. She’s also served as the majority chief tax counsel for the Senate Finance Committee.
