Former PM Calls for Tax Overhaul to Drive EU Competitiveness (1)

The EU should put a cap on energy taxes across the bloc and change its procedures to pass tax legislation more easily, according a report tasked with improving the EU’s competitiveness.

The report, published Monday and drafted by former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, said that the EU’s “higher energy taxation than other parts of the world adds a tax wedge to prices”.

Energy taxation has become “an important source of budget revenues, contributing to higher retail prices,” the report added.
