Malaysia Tax Agency Explains Tax Treatment of Foreign-Sourced Income

The Malaysian National News Agency March 11 posted online a statement explaining that employment income earned in Singapore or other foreign jurisdictions is exempt in Malaysia, because the source of income is not in Malaysia. The statement also clarifies that individuals residing in Malaysia for over 183 days: 1) are classified as residents for tax purposes; and 2) are not subject to tax if their income is not sourced from Malaysia.
