Meloni Rebukes French Claim of Italian ‘Fiscal Dumping’ (1)

Italy and France sparred over tax competition within the European Union, reigniting a debate over whether EU countries are seeking economic advantages at the expense of their peers.

Bayrou, who’s under pressure ahead of a Sept. 8 confidence vote over planned budget cuts, accused Italy in a television interview Sunday of “pursuing a policy of fiscal dumping.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office replied with an unusual personal rebuke that called the claim “utterly baseless.”
