Workers at South Africa’s tax agency began a pay strike that will target customs posts at the nation’s ports and other collection facilities, the Public Servants Association said.
About 6,000 members of the labor union are expected to stop work at the South African Revenue Service, Reuben Maleka, the PSA’s acting deputy general manager, said by text message on Wednesday. The union rejected an offer by the authority to increase wages by a total of 500 million rand ($32 million) and pay one-off bonuses, he said.
