Seattle Property Tax Increase for Transportation Goes to Voters

July 10, 2024, 8:31 PM UTC

Seattle voters will decide in November whether to raise property tax rates to fund $1.55 billion in transportation projects.

Mayor Bruce Harrell signed an ordinance Wednesday sending the transportation levy to the ballot. It would renew and expand a similar tax that expires at the end of 2024, allowing Seattle to exceed a property tax cap for up to eight years.

  • Under the proposal, annual property tax for an owner of a median-value Seattle home would rise to $499 from $300, according to a staff analysis of the measure.
