Singapore Tax Agency Clarifies Income Taxation of Debt Securities

The Singaporean Inland Revenue Authority April 1 posted online Advance Ruling Summary No. 6/2026, clarifying the income tax treatment of debt securities. The taxpayer, the trustee of a Singapore-listed real estate investment trust (REIT), issued subordinated perpetual securities treated as equity for accounting purposes, and that it could use in refinancing existing borrowings and meeting general working capital requirements. The securities gave holders the right to receive distributions, which weren’t tied to performance. The taxpayer sought clarification on whether the securities qualified as debt securities.
