Spain to Tighten Taxes on Refrigerant Gases in Fraud Crackdown

Spain is asking for input on plans to tighten tax rules on the transport, storage, and possession of greenhouse refrigerant gases, following the recent discovery of a carbon tax fraud ring.

Under the proposed changes, those manufacturing, storing or acquiring fluorinated gases within the European Union must present quarterly declarations in accordance with the existing special tax due on gases which deplete the ozone layer. They would also be required to register with Spanish authorities, according to a consultation launched Thursday.
