Donald Trump’s picks for US solicitor general and other key Justice Department positions were advanced by a Senate panel, teeing them up to be confirmed despite Democrats’ concerns about elevating the president’s personal attorneys.
The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 12-10 along party lines on Thursday in support of the nominations of John Sauer, Trump’s personal lawyer who argued the president’s immunity case, for solicitor general, and of Harmeet Dhillon, also Trump’s personal attorney, as head of the DOJ’s civil rights division.
