U.K. Treasury Extends Property Tax Holiday to More Businesses

March 25, 2020, 2:22 PM UTC

More industries can take advantage of a new U.K. program that waives business property taxes to soften the impact of the new coronavirus outbreak.

Real estate agents, letting agents, and bingo halls won’t have pay to business rates—a type of property tax on commercial real estate under the expanded program announced Wednesday. The tax relief will be extended for a year.

  • Under the property tax waiver program, first announced March 17, eligible businesses included shops, restaurants, cafes, drinking establishments, cinemas and live music venues, and hotels.
  • “We are determined to do whatever it takes to support businesses during Covid-19, which is why we have extended business rates relief for the high street,” Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said.
