Uber Loses at UK Supreme Court on Competitor Tax Requirement

The UK Supreme Court Tuesday rejected Uber’s effort to force its competitors outside London to apply a 20% value-added tax on ride-hailing profits.

Uber Britannia Ltd. had tried to compel all private cab services outside London to adopt a business model that would have made them liable for VAT on all fares. The top court, ruling in favor of private-hire operators Veezu Holdings Ltd. and Delta Merseyside Ltd., said its decision doesn’t “differ in substance” from the Court of Appeal’s judgment last year, which Uber had lost.
