Uganda Considers New Internet Tax as Social-Media Levy Fails

East African country is proposing a 12% levy on internet data, with exemption of purchases for medical and education services, the Finance Ministry says on Twitter.

• Ministry wants to repeal a daily 200-shilling over-the-top-services tax for social-media users
• NOTE: Collections from the tax introduced in 2018 have been below target as users have avoided it by using virtual private networks, according to Uganda Revenue Authority
• Other proposed taxes include annual licenses for vehicle owners, an export levy of $200/kg of gold and 1% of the value of unprocessed minerals, Ugandan parliament says on its website
