Ugandan Telecoms Want Mobile-Money Taxes Halved to Boost Usage

Telecommunications operators urge the government to slash excise duty to 0.25% from 0.5% to encourage usage and ultimately boost revenue, parliament says on its website.

  • Companies want tax capped at 5,000 shillings per transaction
  • Transactions are also subject to a 15% service charge
  • Taxes on mobile money transactions are higher than those on withdrawals at automated teller machines, mainly used by middle-income earners
  • At least 35 million mobile-money transactions were made in the year ended-September last year worth 175 trillion shillings, according to Bank of Uganda
